Early Life & Beginnings

Mbosso (Mbwana Yusuf Kilungi) grew up in a humble setting in Kibiti, Pwani Region. His mother, Hadija Salom Kikaali, was a farmer, and his father, Yusuf Kilungi, worked in local transport (matatu) operations.

He studied up to Form Four, but because of economic pressures and his passion for music, he left formal schooling and moved to Dar es Salaam to pursue his dreams.

At one point, after the breakup of his early band, Mbosso even returned to farming in his hometown, but he was later convinced by his friend Rayvanny to reignite his music career in Dar and join WCB Wasafi.

Musical Journey & Career

  • Mbosso’s introduction to the music scene came via Yamoto Band, a group formed under “Mkubwa na Wanawe” (led by Mkubwa Fella). The band also included Aslay, Enock Bella, and Beka Flavour. Together, Yamoto Band gained significant popularity before disbanding in about 2015–2017.

  • After the split, Mbosso went through a challenging period, returning to Kibiti to help his family through farming.

  • Rayvanny played a key role in encouraging him to re-enter Dar es Salaam, and Mbosso soon signed on with WCB Wasafi, the label founded by Diamond Platnumz.

  • His solo career took off with tracks like “Watakubali,” “Nimekuzoea,” “Tamu,” “Picha Yake,” “Nadekezwa,” and “Hodari.”

  • In March 2021, he released his debut full-length album Definition of Love, featuring collaborations with major names like Diamond Platnumz, Rayvanny, Njenje Band, Mr Flavour, Liya, Spice Diana, Darassa, and Baba Levo.

  • Later, in November 2022, he released his EP Khan, a more intimate collection of romantic tracks, which gained millions of streams.

  • By 2023, Mbosso had joined the elite group of Tanzanian artists that crossed 200 million streams on Boomplay.

Style, Influence & Impact

Mbosso is known for his soulful vocals, emotive storytelling, and ability to blend romantic themes with modern African soundscapes. His music speaks to both the heart and the streets.

He has also contributed to raising the profile of Tanzanian music across East Africa, performing in countries such as Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and beyond. His collaborations with other East African artists and cross-border reach amplify his influence.

Personal Life & Legacy

  • Mbosso is a father. He has a child named Iqram Khan with Rukia (whom he dated before fame).

  • He was previously married to Boss Martha, a comedian, who unfortunately passed away after illness. The two had been together and had a child.

  • Despite his fame, Mbosso is known for humility and placing importance on faith — he often gives credit to God (Alhamdulillah) for his success.

  • Over time, he has achieved respectable financial success, been able to gift a house and car to his parents, and live a comfortable lifestyle.
